Hangzhou and your Business Opportunities
Hangzhou is the capital of the coastal province of Zhejiang. In 2002, about GDP 170 billion Yuan RMB (ca EURO 19 billion) was generated, or a per capita GDP of EURO 3167 (population in Hangzhou reached about 6 million in all - 3 million in the town and the rest in the suburban or urban areas).

Since 1998, housing prices soared like a unsaddled horse - average price increased from RMB 2000/m2 to more than RMB 6200/m2 today. Huge money has been pouring into the real estate industry - from the wealthy Wenzhou businessmen, speculators, big real estate developers, buyers from Hongkong, Taiwan, and overseas.

With the real estate booming follow other commerce and industries. The Westlake is renovated; completely new business areas and residential quarters are uprising; many industrial zones are mushrooming; giant bridges (the longest in the world as a example), highways, tunnels, airport expansion, railways, museums, plazas, entertainment parks, stadiums etc etc.

All these projects are all in the size of billions of RMB, and are highly profitable. But how do you know all these projects ? Where are they ? How can I get a foot on them ? Are there any chances for me ? How shall I approach these projects ? These and other critical questions are all vital to any one who wants to only be successful in Hangzhou in particular and in China in general.

Hangzhou Info Services

Hangzhou was once labbeled "Paradise on the Heaven and Suzhou and Hangzhou in the World". It was considered on of the best living places in China. But not now. With more and more skyscrapers, cars and people, it looks more like a commercial city, a district of Shanghai. It is loosing its attractiveness day by day. The only thing left is the West Lake.

However, I have to stay here for a while as I have no alternative. As long as I am still living in Hangzhou, I have to deal with local people, supermarkets, shopping malls, banks, neighbors and more. Here I try to tell you about some of my daily life and some general information about the city, and of course the key events occurring here. For example the West Lake Fair to be held in mid October every year. It's not intended to be a tourist or business guide, nor is it a complete introduction. It's the city of my observation, with my viewpoint of course. And you don't need to agree with me.

I personally don't like the city at all. Its native citizens are very narrow-hearted. It's too hot in Summer and too cold in Winter. Most of the city is dirty, dusty, noisy, chaotic, crowded, polluted. Hangzhou is the dirtiest and dustiest city I have ever been and the city population is at least one level less educated than the metropolitans I know before in Shanghai and Beijing. When I ride 10 minutes, my mouth is already full of dust (I'm living in the western part of the city, if you live around the Lake you will not have so much dust). And my lung gets containminated each time going out. The bicycle and my clothing get lots of dust and mud when riding out, especially on raininy days. Many roads are uneven and bumpy. Busses, people, bikes, triwheeels (man or engine driven), are interweaving, they go everywhere and anyway they want. The Wenyi Road is in complete chaos and covered in dust all the days. The whole society is in chaos.

Sept 08, 2003
Today we have better weather. Temperature drops to 32 C, and the low is 23 C. Yesterday we were still on high - 35 C, and the day before 37-38 C.
But the neighboring environment doesn't change. Unbearable noise out of wall drillers, sewers, cutters come from my neighbors and from the work shop just opened within the yard.

The gasoline tube of my neighbor's motorbike was cut off and his fuel was taken by the thefts overnight. Here security is very bad. Two days ago there was a street fighting, and I saw the police car coming to take away the fighters.

Note: there's only one true university in the whole province of a population of 47 millions, the size of Grerat Britain.

House & Housing

The housing prices are more than tripled over the last three years. For example, the normal house price per m2 in the Hushou Nan Road was about RMB 1500 - 1800, and now it's well above 5000. The area where I am living now is far away from the downtown area, but prices have skyrocketed to 6000-8000 per m2. This area, in quality and distance to living is similar to Beijing 5th ring or Shanghai's outskirts. Prices of housing are much higher here in Hangzhou than in Beijing and Shanghai. But living facilities and environment are much worse, except the areas just around the West Lake area.

I found my room with the help of brother-in-law. But many go to the agents who charge you a monthly rate first before you are allowed to have a look of your house. This money will not be retunred, or only half will be repaid to you if they cannot find a house for you for a certain time period.

Some go to the Internet for searching a house. Here belwo are some popular sites for you:

After finding your house, you shall sign a contract with them, here is my own samplar.

In any circumstance, Hangzhou is not the right place for buying a house, if you are not rich enough. But this list (incomplete) warns you not to buy any houses from them.

Job

The provincial capital dosn't have the right place for me to work. Here there's no multinational companies in the power generation sector - except the GE Hydro which acquired the hydroturbine manufacturer later in 2002. GE has a representative, but they work on electrical and medical fields; Siemens too. No energy companies. Local companies can't provide the working atmosphere, company culture and salary I'm used to.

If you care nothing for the above, you can find a job from one of the following sites:

I have tried these sites and the International sites (see below) as well, all but in vain:
  • http://www.recruitex.com/
And now I have to work alone.

Girls

Women of Hangzhou are very practical, much worse than those in Shanghai or Beijing. By "practical" it is meant that they care for money at top consideration when dating with boys or men. Nowadays they first concenrs is the house status of his sex partner, then income, job, family, and look. Few favor scientists, researchers, Ph.D. or scholars like me. No considerations will be given to the morality, personality and other virtues highly praised in western cultures.

Girls here are not as beautiful as many think. They look undernurished, not attractive as a mature woman. It seems they will fall down at the slightest wind blow.

Many come from rural areas, without much education in school and at home. Their clothing looks shabbier as those in Shanghai and Beijing.

I was only introduced one woman who works in a governmental department. I have paid movie tickets, drinks and taxis to her home. But she never said thanks to me when she got out of the taxis. She also never cared for my whereabouts in the taxis, and she kept talking in the aboriginal tongue during the journey. It was raining heavily and wind blew hastily. She only cares for herself and she is typical of Hangzhou Ren, particularly Hangzhou women. Shall I continue my dating and marry such terrible race ? Certainly not !

But I did meet a nice girl from Guizhou. She even invited me twice for dinner and I repeatedly tried to invite her for dinner or lunch, but she refused. Possibly because she knew I was not quite well off at that time, possibly she didn't like me at all. But she was different creature - she cares for others. With her, I found some owmenlike characteristics - with the other one, I only see a whore, a prostitute who exchanges her body for money or properties.

If you still want to try some girls, here are places you can go for finding your girlfriend: They are not restricted to Hangzhou. Most of them serve the whole world.

Friends

Making friends in Hangzhou is very difficult here. Provincial inhabitants are very closed-up to themselves. They never actively contact you if you don't contact them first, in order to show that it's you, not they, are in need of them.

Living here for three year dosn't give me a chance to have a friend, it's nearly a miracle. Earlier, whenever I go, I always have one or two close friends, and that's almost enough.

Now I have only one friend - my computer.

German Companies in Hangzhou
All in all there are only a dozen of Germany invested companies in Hangzhou. The reasons are manyfold: lack of promotion by the local authorities, complixities of opening a joint venture or fully owned company or even a representative office, less skillful and diligent labor forces, too close to Shanghai etc.
