Fluiddynamics

(2010)

I cannot remember clearly how did I come to fluiddynamics. Of course it is one of the four key subjects of thermophysics - my major course of early days at university. My two key foci were CFD and nano fluidics or nano fluid dynamics.

WHY CFD RESEARCHES AND WHY NOT IN CHINA???

The reason to seek CFD is the fact that it belongs to one of the fundamental science of the thermal physics chapter and I have learned it very intensively over the past and my business over the last couple of years are related to this area.

China’s education and research segments are currently very corrupted, therefore it is impossible to undertake pure researches without the compromise with this system. And the general trends towards decay of the Chinese society does not allow for genuine researches and studies.

Letters to the Academia

Dear Prof. XXX:

I am pleased to submit my application documents for the position of “PhD in Fluid-Structure Interaction” at the department of Mechanical Engineering, the XXX University (XXX).

As an enthusiast of computational mathematics and physics, and a long-time engineer of CFD simulation particularly in the power and energy industry, I am interested in your program and the related researches. Here I have collected some documented facts of my CFD related experiences over the past for your reference. Further details may be provided for you upon request.

Here it is to mention that during these years of CFD career, I have also developed and upgraded several existing CFD models specific to the industries and applications.

My weak point is my lack of publication records in this area, mainly due to the lack of chances to write academic paper in the past.

Additional information about my career is also provided, although not directly related to this application but is absolutely worthwhile reading before making any conclusion about my qualifications, as I am not an average applicant for this job.

I strongly recommend you to read the “Wonderfulpast.pdf” file first which tells you why I am applying for a CFD research job at this stage of my life.

In addition, it’s also to mention my multi-lingual capacuty – English has been my working languages since the last two decades and it is close to my mother tongue. Apart from English I am also proficient in German, French, Russian and Greek to some degree, although they are not helpful in CFD stuff, but their studies give me fun and happiness particularly the learning of ancient Greek literature.

I am a Master of Science majoring in thermal physics in engineering with focus on pollution control on combustion.

Thank you for your patience in reading my motivation and explanatory letter and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Chen Minghua
Hangzhou, P.R. China
P.S.:
(1) if my application is rejected, please be so kind as to give me your reasoning.
(2) I propose you try not to think too much and negatively about my age and instead put more efforts admiring my vast knowledge, experiences, expertise and capacity in CFD and other areas, and imagine me as an young PhD student with excellent learning ability and vividity.
(3) You may choose either one of the languages for communications as you prefer.

Another Inquiry Letter

Dear Prof. XXX,

I am pleased to submit my application documents for the position of “PhD in numerical hemodynamics” at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine (ASAM) at XXX University.  I am intending to continue my research program after being interrupted more than 20 years ago for various reasons. But I don’t know if you mind my age and my zigzag past.

CFD related background

As early as in my graduate studies time I was already interested in and studied a little about the blood dynamics or hemodynamics in order to find out the causes of headache suffered by my mother. And still today, I am always interested in this subject, and wants to learn the mechanism of blood flow throughout the human body and its many factors and influences to health.

I’ve strong background in fluid mechanics and have demonstrated computational and experimental skills over the past in my work and studies, incl. among other, also high performance computing and parallel numerical simulations. During the last years, I have also been involving in the computational modeling of various industrial and commercial systems, facilities and equipments, as well as complex multiphase flow in various processes and systems.

As an enthusiast of computational science (mathematics, physics etc) I have been following this branch of science ever since my graduation in 1983, in my work as well in my part-time studies as one of my key hobbies and interests. During these years of CFD career, I have developed and upgraded several existing CFD models specific to the industries and applications.

MY CFD-philia is not just centered around fluid mechanics, rather spreads over to other branches of the thermophysics – heat and mass transfer, and combustion.

Details see below and the attached documents.

IT skills
I am familiar with all major IT technologies incl coding, databases etc.

Languages
English has been my working language since the 1991.

Apart from English and German I am also proficient in French, Russian and Greek to some degree.

Education
I am a Master of Engineering majoring in thermal physics in engineering with focus on pollution control on combustion [(bachelor1978-1983) and master’s (1986-1989) degree in thermal engineering]

Career
My career so far can be summarized as below:

2005 up to now:
Self-employed, with cooperation with others and the establishment of my own business docusing on technical and academic learning. Business has been shifted to fluid technology consulting and services incl. CFD design, simulation and optimization for various processes and industries. Academic researches have been also turned to CFD and fluiddynamics with focus on small structures and Non-Newtonian.

2000-2005
Self-employed with cooperation with others and the establishment of my own business. First concentrated on IT services mainly industry portal design and database design and management (2000-2003) . Then solar business, Conventional power, other renewable energy consulting, and information.  For very short period of time I was also engaged in other discrete businesses such as business aviation, cryptography and thermodynamic consulting. Researches have been changing very tremendously from thermodynamics to cryptography, and solar physics etc.

1983-1986, 1989-1999
Career at major domestic and multinational organizations, corporations and institutions with functions such as procurement, marketing, quality assurance, design, coordination and planning, technical review and evaluation in the conventional power, nuclear power, telecommunications, electronics, and certification industries

Thank you for your patience in reading my motivation and explanatory letter and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Chen Minghua
